"It will take a little bit of time. Its going to take a lot of effort, a lot of energy. And I'll give it that. I have to, I have to because that is what I want for my life and what I want with my life I'm willing to work for and what I'm willing to work for I'm definatly willing to achieve."
~ R.I.P. CR Johnson

Obviously, he had little responsibility in life; no wife, children or job that interferes with time on the mountain. Now, being off the mountain for a while, the endorphin receptors are apt to be more responsive than later in the season, when it takes all day to get the same buzz. The true addict may sometimes say to themselves that they don't really want to go skiing, but they suddenly find themselves riding a chairlift up and asking themselves if they were crazy

Ski Addiction.

So how does ski addiction work? Some might say, that the ski bum gives up a lot to get the ski fix on a regular basis. If they're not skiing, they're jonesing for a fix and as soon as they get the fix, everything's fine again. Many just don't understand what a good ski high is all about and unless they're that small percentage that knows what it's like to have the needle in their arm, they'll never understand. You're either a ski addict or your not.

To those that understand no explanation is necessary, To those that do not understand no explanation is possible!
~ Every real skier.

"nothing is impossible, you are only limited by fear and even that you can overcome"
~ Seth Morrison

"You know, we're skiers from day one, we'll be skiers till the day we die, and its a beautiful thing just to come back year after year, see new faces and old faces but still the same smiling faces."
~ Tanner Hall

Reaching the top I look back to see, A flat layer of clouds moving under me, The sunny blue sky and soft white snow, With skyscraypers peeking through the fog below. I am free to venture where I choose to roam, This is why I call the mountain my home.

even letting the thought of not skiing into their mind. What else would they rather be doing than skiing right now?

In summary, ski addiction is a condition that doesn't affect a substantial portion of the population. Those that are ski addicts know it and experience a wonderful phenomenon as soon as they're on the mountain. For example, many addicts are irritable on the drive to the mountain and little things annoy them. On the drive back, nothing matters and they have a sense of peace,

frequently accompanied by a wonderful euphoria. Relax, you're not alone and you will run into a few here and there up on the mountain and in ski resort communities. When you start talking about skiing, it'll be easy to spot and will respond with equal enthusiasm.

"More than just a big adrenalin rush, it's more like, 'let's explore what's possible in our sport.'"
~ Shane McConkey (Dec 1969 - March 2009)

"Training? Nah we just out there havin fun every damn day"
~ Tom Wallisch

"Once you make that first turn, your life will be messed up forever"
~ Warren Miller

"people have told me i have a one track mind. not true, skis leave two tracks."
~ Pollard

"I am a skier, I must ski."
~ Unknown

I got you guys all beat.
Like the citys view on a winter day, Clouds have rolled in, skys have turned grey. Looking around into the sweet white abyss I find myself troubled to acknowladge all this. Ground, trees and sky all the same, Sometimes I wonder if I am insane, For hanging from chairs 30 feet in the air While 40 kilometer winds gust through my hair. The fragile black lift rattles and shakes, As it travels upwards for the 11 minutes it takes.

A champion is someone who goes so far they can't go another inch, and then they go that inch.
~ Vince Lombardi

"You put on your boots, click into your bindings, dust the snow off your skis, and head out for the chair, and it doesn't matter that you failed a test, didn't get the girl, or that your life is on a one way trip down the shitter, your world is right for the next couple of hours"
~ Unknown

Feel the fear, and do it anyway!
~ Unknown

In our observations, we've seen numerous examples of ski addiction. On a recent day of spring skiing, a young man said he slept in his car overnight to save on gas and be able to ski again that day. A fifty year old supermarket checkout guy had that skier tanned face from being out all season. He was working evenings, so he could ski all day. He had a big smile and his life centered around skiing.

“The reason why Tanner and all these skiers take the risks they do is beacause they love it, and that’s it. You only know what I mean if you really love something, it’s like you would die for your wife, and that is the only thing that is relateable probably to someone who doesn’t ski”
~ Eric Iberg

"Only the things that you truly love will you pursue with that energy, and for me my family, my friends, and skiing, that's it for me, that's my life. The joy I get from skiing...that's worth dying for."
~ R.I.P. CR Johnson
