Initially, the word leet was used as an adjective, to primarily describe the behavior or accomplishments of others in the community. In that usage, Leet generally carries the same meaning when referring to either the game prowess or, in original usage, hacking expertise of another person.
From adjective form its use then expanded to include use as an expletive or interjection in reaction to a demonstration of the former qualities.

Within Leet, the term noob, and derivations thereof, is used extensively. The word means, and derives from, newbie (as in new and inexperienced or uninformed), and is used as a means of segregating the "elite" members of a group from outsiders.

Hackers hebben ook normen, de zogenaamde hackersethiek. Deze is terug te vinden in de indeling "black-hat/grey-hat/white-hat hackers". Ook is het zo dat een hacker in de wereld van de hackers status kan verwerven door zijn of haar kennis te delen met anderen. Dit doet men door opensourcesoftware te schrijven.

Binnen de hackersgemeenschap wordt wel onderscheid gemaakt tussen hackers en crackers. Een veelgenoemd verschil tussen hackers en crackers is dat hackers hun handelingen vaak verrichten als uiting van constructieve creativiteit of als goedbedoelde handelingen (zoeken naar veiligheidslekken om deze later te kunnen dichten; soms huren bedrijven hackers in om de beveiliging van hun systemen te testen). Crackers handelen uit crimineel, ideologisch of vernielzuchtig oogpunt.

Woordenboeken maken geen onderscheid tussen 'goede' en 'kwade' hackers. Zo omschrijft de Van Dale een hacker als: "iem. die inbreekt in een computer om gegevens te achterhalen of te wijzigen, meestal met het doel de zwakke plekken aan te tonen". Het Engelse Merriam Webster definieert de term als: "a person who illegally gains access to and sometimes tampers with information in a computer system".

De mensen met de beste veiligheidstips zijn hackers, niet de slijmballen in de ontvangstruimte.

With the mass proliferation of Internet use in the 1990s into the 21st century, Leet has since become a part of Internet culture and slang. Leet may also be considered a substitution cipher, albeit with much variation from user to user.
Among the earliest Internet slang terms is LOL, an indication of appreciation of humor, literally meaning “Laughing Out Loud” or “Lots Of Laughs”. Similar acronyms were quickly added to the lexicon, including ROFL (“Rolling On the Floor Laughing”)

Hackers zelf noemen degenen die uit criminele oogmerken een systeem "kraken" ook wel black-hat hackers. Zelf noemen ze zich white-hat hackers, analoog aan cowboyfilms waarin de "kwaden" zwarte hoeden droegen en de "goeden" witte hoeden, ofschoon hackers zichzelf niet als zodanig benoemen. Ook zijn er grey-hat hackers, een kruising tussen crackers en hackers.

Leet or Eleet (in Leet: L337 or 3L337; see table below), also known as Leetspeak or Leetors (L3370rz), is an alphabet used primarily on the Internet, uses various combinations of ASCII characters to replace Latinate letters. The term is derived from the word "elite", and the usage it describes is a specialized form of symbolic writing. Different dialects of leet are found on different online forums.
